Continuing with the theme of the earlier thread on Ship of Fools as an encore.......

I'm curious as to what song(s) the band did that absolutely make you cringe - like you'd rather get waterboarded than listen to it again. If you could zoof a song out of existence what would it be?

I'm having a hard time with any version of "Here Comes Sunshine" and at the risk of blasphemy, "Hard To Handle" is starting to wear very thin. William Tell, please don't keyboard lash me too harshly.

Apologies if this is a dupe question, just wondering....

I Will Take You Home, Tons of Steel, Never Trust A Woman, We Can Run, all the Beatles and Stones (including Satisfaction, It's All Over Now, and especially the Hey Jude reprise), and I Will Take You Home. On the sacrilege side, I'll take out Stagger Lee and Dupree's Diamond Blues - both great songs but the live versions just plod.

Anything with Bob on slide. He got a little better over the years but at this point my hand involuntarily reaches for the 'next track' button when ever I hear him start screeching. Actually, over the summer I had a show playing through outdoor speakers in my back yard. I was watering the lawn and the squeaking of the hose winder sounded EXACTLY like Bob's slide playing.

Song-wise, Gimme Some Lovin’ has always been a tune that I just can’t stand to hear (and I’m huge on Phil) and was surpassed only by I Fought the Law- way beyond cheesy. e

picasso moon.

Or any tune from "Built to Last". Yes, that includes Foolish Heart.

Oh, and "Looks Like Rain".....except it made for a great 1st set bathroom break so at least it was good for something.

Cringe factor? Find the "Blackbird" cover they attempted in 1988 and don't EVER let a Grateful Dead hater anywhere near it. You'll never hear the end of it. (It is an embarrassment to music as an art form.)

I love that Blackbird, only because the non-singers in the band spend the whole performance laughing at the singers. Mickey about busts a gut ...

Oh man, really? I love that song. I know it was part of Bobby's cowboy-wannabe phase, but I think it's a great song with poignant lyrics.

Day Job:

Hunter, in his Box of Rain, notes that

"This song was dropped from the Grateful Dead repertoire at the request of fans. Seriously."

All covers of Beatles, Traffic, and Who numbers. At the top of the list 'Why don't we do it in the road ?' and 'Dear Mr Fantasy'. 'Cringe' is the word.

So many good numbers of their own and the best jammin' band in the world. Why why why ? Oh yeah and 'Green green grass of home.'

Rant over, thank you.

I suppose most of this thread depends on when you were touring. Somewhere there must be some guy who only went in '68 saying "Yeah, that damn Dark Star thingy, they play it ever friggin' night!"

I started going in the early 80's so...

Ever occurrence of Me and My Uncle -> Mexacali

C.C. Rider and Little Red Rooster (they are the same in my head at this point)

U.S. Blues

Anyone who went in the mid 80's would have to agree DAY JOB is tops on this list

We Can Run/Built to Last/Picasso Moon/Gruelish Fart...

Anything Phil wrote in the mid-90's (Childhood's End, Piss in the wind...)

I Fought The Law/Baba O'Rielly/Tomorrw Never Knows... and anything from the "Dead as the most expensive cover band in history" phase of their career.

Oh yeah... and finally. Any Estimated Prophet were Bobby screams like a grade school girl on a bad acid trip in a fun house. Where the hell did he get the idea that it EVER sounded good?

In The Bin: Chuck Berry covers, all Brit-rock covers, Push Comes To Shove, All Brent tunes (except "Just A Little Light" which I actually enjoy), All Pig tunes sung by Bobby, Standing On The Moon, Let Me Sing Your Blues Away, Money Money. And am I the only one who thinks Sugar Mag kind of wears out it's welcome over time? I'd rather hear HtoH "BAYEEEE-by, here I am..."

You're right about Sugar Mag; couldn't they find another song to close out the 2nd set? But how could you keep Just a Little Light and throw out Blow Away?

cuz I'm bloody-minded? I don't know, it's just subjective taste, right? "Blow Away" just doesn't blow me away or something... I think Just A Little Light is the best Michael McDonald song ever...oh, wait a minute... wrong Soul Man. :)

Since I saw only 'Brent' era from a live in person standpoint I would have to say Easy to Love You and Far From Me could be zapped for all eternity and it would not phase me one bit.

Not arguing with your choices at all, but you might re-visit the Here Comes Sunshine on DP #1. The last four or five minutes of the jam before the final chorus are just God.

the problem with that was enduring bobby trying to learn to play slide. I did like versions I saw when Brent got raw and nasty on it. I always enjoyed Brent era shows more when he played with a bit more of a rough edge

me too! Reminds me of a time I was in the parking lot and I said to me friend how sick I was of that song and I'm glad they weren't playing it much anymore. Sure enough Bob busted it out that night and they nailed it good. Goes to show you dont ever know.

I won't be hard on you at ALL for mentioning HtoH. Though GoP just loves that song to death, and though I am always talking about the amazing version from 8-6-71, it almost makes me have a little cringe now that I am listening to so much 71 (see JOTS? I told you I am...ha).

I have heard it so many times in the past six months that I can skip it.

Those that follow me know I can often skip a PP tune from the early era (LL, but like IHMToo, MidHr), and the more I hear "Baaay...BEEEeeee" (think chipmunkesque nut squeezing high note at the outset) the more I am starting to agree with my wife that it is just not the best vocal use of PP...IHMToo is!

Anything written by Brent Mydland.
The excruciatingly tedious Sailor/Saint.
Anything that gave Pigpen free rein to set off on one of his toe-curlingly embarrassing getyohandsouttayomamaspocketsandhepmestickthislovelightupyocandyass rants. Eighteen minutes plus of Lovelight is about 15 minutes plus too long - and when it starts to drift towards 30 plus it's time to go walk the dog. The hideous Lovelight 'duet' with Joplin should be stricken from the record.
Oh yeah, and anything written by Brent Mydland.

Must agree with Snori, though - leave British rock out. The Grateful Dead were the ultimate American band.
